The total character count (including newlines) is divided by 400. For example, 1200 characters = 3.0 pages of 400-character manuscript paper.

X/Twitter counts CJK (Japanese, Chinese, Korean) and full-width characters as 2 units each. The 280-unit limit is equivalent to 140 full-width Japanese characters.

Half-width characters include ASCII (letters, numbers, symbols) and half-width katakana. Full-width characters include hiragana, katakana, kanji, and full-width alphanumerics.
